Introduction

The course provides the opportunity for suitably qualified graduate students to undertake a dissertation based program in the field of social sciences. The program emphasises independent research and the analysis of advanced problems in the theory and practice of a specific discipline or in the multidisciplinary approach to a topic and requires the completion of a dissertation.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Refer to Admission into Honours Degree Programs and Regulations for Honours Degrees (General Information section). The following are eligible to apply for places in the programs - those students who have completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences at Curtin and normally with scores of at least 65 per cent in 10 of the 12 units comprising the second and third years of the course and those students with similar academic experience and levels of attainment, either in the social sciences course or from elsewhere.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The dissertation based program is of one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. External study is available.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note

Undergraduate students interested in the honours program are urged to contact the Deputy Head, Research and Development after the end of their second year of study. They will then be advised as to appropriate units to include in their final year of theirbasic degree. As a consequence of curriculum review, this honours course is being reviewed in 2003. Prospective students should consult their respective Course Coordinator for updated information about completion requirements.
