Introduction

This course provides an internationally recognised qualification with theoretical and practical knowledge in occupational therapy allowing work as entry-level occupational therapists throughout the world. Occupational therapists are employed in a variety of health, other human services, business and industry settings in both rural and urban areas and in private practice.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Applicants must have a bachelors degree in a health science or equivalent with at least a credit average pass. Evidence of studies in the human biosciences, psychology, behavioural or sociological science and research methods is required. If such evidence is not available, applicants may need to undertake bridging units before commencement of the course. International applicants must show evidence of English proficiency in either an IETLS (International English Language Test System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test.

Specific Requirements

Applicants are advised that a Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance is required for students in this course. Please refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance section of the Handbook. Students are required to have a current Essential First Aid Certificate within four weeks of entry into the first year of the course. In addition, throughout the course, students are required to have passed all units in any one year before being allowed to proceed to the next year.

Duration and Availability

This course is of two years full-time or equivalent on-campus part-time study starting in January and finishing in November each year. Students are required to undertake some of their studies outside the formal semester periods. The course is an integrated and sequential package and it is not possible to commence at any time other than the beginning of the year.

Course Organisation

The course requires full participation in all teaching and learning sessions. This requires that students have the ability to participate fully and are willing to act as subjects for their peer group, as well as being able to undertake those tasks required when working with people with a range of disabilities. Clinical practice in a number of health and allied settings is a compulsory component of the course.

Professional Recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists and for registration with the Occupational Therapists Registration Board of Western Australia. The course is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. In addition, students are required to purchase a laboratory coat, an approved clinical uniform and an anatomy authorisation.
