Introduction

This course provides skills and knowledge allowing them to bring to professional life an understanding and appreciation of contemporary social issues and heightened skills in social research and analysis. It assists in career development preparing them for new employment opportunities in a variety of public and private sector contexts requiring social scientific research and analytical skills. It is designed to complement existing knowledge gained from an undergraduate qualification in any recognised area including business, humanities, sciences and education. It also combines a general qualification with more specific educational opportunities which students learn in a way that best suits existing needs and priorities.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree with an appropriate level of achievement in any field of study from a recognised tertiary education institution. Students may also gain entry through completion of the Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Studies and transfer to this course after successful completion of the first half of that course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Creative overlap between current employment and study is emphasised with students be awarded credit for prior learning and demonstrated existing skills.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Sustainability Studies or Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Studies, may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject toapproval of the Head of School/Department. Course Organisation

Students are required to complete at least one-third of their program via individual, supervised research or production projects at an advanced level, developing highly sophisticated skills in research, analysis, communication and reflection. There may be opportunities for practicum combinations of study and work.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
