Introduction

This course is structured to provide advanced training in various aspects of applied geology. It is designed to cater for both recent graduates and for the graduate who is already employed and wishes to study part-time. The program is divided into four streams - specialist geology topics, petroleum geology, economic geology and hydrogeology.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree, involving a major study in an appropriate field, although applicants with alternative educational backgrounds are considered. Students with backgrounds that do not include the more applied aspects of geology may be required to undertake a maximum of two background studies units.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is of one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. The actual of the course, and the availability of various units, may be much more flexible than suggested, for example, part of the research project may be undertaken in short intensive periods or it may be arranged that some units be taken in concentrated blocks, at times suitable to students and staff, rather than at fixed times during each week of the semester.

Course Organisation

The course requires a program of study comprising at least eight full units. This is made up of - core units (two full units), project units (one to five full units), specialist/selected units (one to five full units), background studies (up to two full units). Background studies units must be undertaken by students whose backgrounds do not include the more applied aspects of geology. Students will be advised by the Course Co-ordinator if they need to complete such units.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note

Students withbackgrounds that do not include the more applied aspects of geology may be required to undertake a maximum of two background studies units.
