Introduction

The course provides the opportunity to intensively develop talents, concepts and expertise in any of the major studies offered within the Department of Art. Prospective students are also encouraged to submit individual course proposals for specialisation in photography, video, film and post object art. It is designed to enable students to reach a high level of professionalism and qualification in both art practice and visual arts theory.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree or equivalent in any related discipline and an ability to demonstrate that they have commitment and potential to benefit from advanced postgraduate studies in visual arts. All applicants are interviewed and required to submit a detailed study proposal supported by a comprehensive folio of recent work. Admission is dependent upon the quality of the applicant's study proposal, the perceived capacity to bring it to a successful conclusion and the Department of Art's ability to support and supervise the work. A limited number of places are available in each year of this course. Applicants are advised to seek early consultation with the postgraduate coordinator before submitting a masters degree study proposal for consideration.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or postgraduate diploma are considered for recognition of prior learning. While applications will be considered from candidates whose standing as visual arts practitioners recommends them as being capable of benefiting from the masters course, such candidates may be required to complete additional studies in Art Theory 491 and 492 if their previous work did not include study of current visual arts language, theory and philosophy.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is two years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

The course is an advanced studio based course with associated theoretical studies designed to intensively develop an area of studio practice as professional artists. The student, in consultation with an appointed staff supervisor, develops a study program based upon the submitted study proposal. The course consists of research studies in visual arts theory and advanced project units relating to the individual student's negotiated study program.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
