Introduction

This course provides the theoretical foundations and practical applications for managing resources in the field of community, local and family history. Students study the information needs of historical researchers, the wide range of materials with whichthey work, the organisational skills of indexing, storing and retrieving information, using both manual and automated systems, and effective methods of managing documentary, audio-visual and electronic heritage resources. Working in the area of local studies requires an interest in history, exceptional communication and organisational skills, the ability to network with the local community, and a desire to enhance access to resources.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A degree in an appropriate discipline.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is of one semester full-time or equivalent part-time study. External study is also available.

Professional Recognition

This course does not confer eligibility for membership of professional bodies in the areas of librarianship, records management, or archives.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Reliable, regular internet access is also required. Students may incur a cost for personal internet access.
