Syllabus: | This unit will introduce the composition of a smart grid and how renewable energy sources can be integrated for environment-friendly operation of electric grid. The communication needs in a smart grid, demand management in particular through home area networks and smart meters, the inclusion of electric energy storages, and their applications in electric vehicles will be discussed. This unit will also present the composition of a microgrid with both renewable and non-renewable source, its ability to increase the penetration of renewable energy sources and how to design and control a microgrid in both grid-connected and stand-alone modes. The design of solar photovoltaic (PV) power systems for both grid-connected and stand-alone applications and the design of stand-alone micro-hydro systems are the other topics covered in this unit. |
