Syllabus: | A molecular approach to drug design. Optimisation of lead compounds to drug candidates, including analysis of structure - activity relationships and molecular bio-efficacy development strategies. Chemical principles and reactions vital to drug design and their molecular-level action will be emphasised using case studies of clinically important drugs. Selected topics in medicinal chemistry including anticancer, antihypertensives and opiate drugs. Brief introduction and overview of inorganic and organometallic chemistry in biology. The use of metal complexes in diagnosis and therapy. Synthesis of organometallic complexes with ligands of biological relevance. Synthetic strategies for the preparation of organometallic and inorganic diagnostic agents. Strategies for the covalent grafting of metal-based labels to biological vectors. Photoelectric attenuation of x-rays for medical imaging. |
