Syllabus: | This intensive unit is intended for non-technical people to acquire a theoretical and practical knowledge applicable to the mining cycle. It is designed for non-science and engineering graduates who work in and with mining companies. The unit incorporates the role of the geologist in the mining industry: exploring basic concepts in geology, mineral exploration, ore formation, ore-reserve estimations, mine geology and evaluation; geological exploration and mining terminology and practices. It introduces the processing stages that follow the discovery and mining of mineral deposits; focusing on the various unit operations in the treatment of a mined ore body from run of mine ore through to a marketable mineral product: considering relevant processes to obtain the end product. The Australian and world mining industry is unpacked for non-mining professionals; with an emphasis on sustainable practice, underground and surface mining methods with an analytical, technological, environmental, ethical and occupationally safe perspective. |
Further Information: | This unit includes an intensive five-day session of classroom and field activities in Kalgoorlie. Please note that submission of the Independent Research Report is scheduled five days after the completion of the fifth day of the program. |
