UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
Syllabus: | This unit focuses on ‘play’ with special emphasis on digitisation and the internet, in various forms including desktop and mobile play. This includes examination of the role of large-scale gaming systems (such as massively multiplayer games and gameworlds), console games, social and causal gaming (like Angry Birds and Farmville), through to critical perspectives on the popular but controversial notion of ‘gamification’ (the application of game mechanics to commerce, e-learning, and fitness, for example), and broader spaces and types of play online. The regional and national specificities of gameplay will also be explored and students will dialogue with diverse debates that deploy specific gaming examples while also offering critical interpretations of play. |
