Areas of study include an introduction to the matter/nutrient cycle in different environmental compartments, flowed by a quantitative geochemical examination of the contamination of the environment illustrated with examples from water pollution, acid mine drainage and impacts of mining, acid sulphate soils, heavy metals and toxicity, and contaminant transport. Students will also analyse environmental aspects of the energy sector, looking at uranium and nuclear power, carbon sequestration and storage, and shale gas and hydro-fracturing. Discipline based problem solving with data analysis, interpretation and evaluation will extend fundamental knowledge in environmental geosciences. |
