Syllabus: | This unit investigates the interactions between the natural environment and human societies including the scientific and cultural contexts in which geoscience operates. Areas of study include the geological hazards presented by volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, meteorites, and coastal processes, the risks they pose to different communities, and their history and mitigation in the developing and developed world. Regional geological, environmental, and cultural history is examined with a split focus on indigenous culture and identity, particularly in relation to the land, and on resource industries, including their social and environmental context. The unit also discusses Earth's climate, considering different drivers for global climatic change, and the impacts of natural and anthropogenic mechanisms on a range of environmental systems. The scientific material in the unit is underpinned throughout by an examination of scientific and geoethics, and the role of communication within and between different groups and communities. |
