Additional Tuition Pattern Information: | This unit consists of an intensive five-day session of classroom activities in Kalgoorlie with assessments completed within the five-day program except for the Final Report which is scheduled for submission seven days after completion of the fifth day of the program. Each session will begin with a lecture/workshop type presentation followed by discussions on assignments. |
Syllabus: | In this unit students are introduced to new techniques for mine development and production, along with new haulage and conveyance systems, mine automation and monitoring. Students will review and evaluate new developments in underground mining systems to achieve productivity, enhance safety and reduce costs. Design considerations for various mining methods will be explored including primary and secondary development excavation design, blast design, cost and productivity estimates, stope services design and materials handling. Geomechanical evaluation and rock properties will be examined along with the application of numerical modelling and limitation and the design methods for dimensioning stopes and pillars. Students will look at the scientific and engineering approach to mine design and will delve into future trends in automated high productivity mining schemes. The emphasis of this unit will be on design principles and discussion of case studies, to illustrate applications of the core principles within the design process. |
