The Secondary major will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Secondary schools in Years 7 - 12. Students in the Secondary major will specialise in two curriculum areas, depending on their previous study and work background, and will be qualified to teach in one major (to Year 12) and one minor (to Year 10) subject areas of the Secondary curriculum. Curriculum areas offered in the Secondary major are: English, The Arts, Mathematics, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
A Bachelor Degree with studies relevant to the major/minor teaching areas offered at Curtin. Specifically, a major teaching area equivalent to a total of three-quarters of a year of successful EFTSL, comprising of sequential discipline study. This equates to six units, with no more than two at first-year level and no fewer than two units at third-year level. A minor teaching area equivalent to a total of half a year of successful EFTSL, comprising of sequential discipline study. This equates to four units, with no more than two at first-year level. Overall IELTS score of 7.5, with no score below 7 in any of the four skill areas and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening.

A graduate of this course can:
1. draw from theory and research to apply knowledge of the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and across the full range of abilities to enhance learning
2. apply high-level discipline knowledge, principles and concepts associated with effective teaching; demonstrate personal literacy and numeracy competencies to the required accreditation standard
3. assess student learning and analyse diverse sources of data to support valid judgements of student learning
4. plan and deliver effective teaching and learning experiences with demonstrated impact
5. use technologies appropriately for learning and teaching
6. engage in professional learning and demonstrate capacity for leadership
7. engage in critical and reflective practice based on local, national and international research
8. create and manage positive learning environments for all students, including those from diverse cultural backgrounds
9. communicate professionally and engage collaboratively with colleagues, parent/carers, and the community
Duration and Availability
This course is two years full time or equivalent part-time study.
