Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Students in this course will hold a degree in another discipline that contains some content relevant to the major chosen. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Graduates from this course will be well-placed to enter leadership pathways in their teaching careers. Most units in this course will be offered fully online, in order to provide more flexible access. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 5 continuous weeks. Two majors are offered in the course: Primary Education and Secondary education, although some units are taken by students in more than one of these majors.
Students are expected to purchase a number of text books and other essential study materials. Students will also be required to meet costs associated with testing of Literacy and Numeracy skills, as well as non-academic attributes.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Applicants will need to hold a degree at Bachelor level or above. Applicants for a Master Degree (coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. If applicable, an IELTS score of 7.5 overall, with no score below 7 in any of the four skill areas, and a score of no less than 8 in Speaking and Listening, is also required. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) requires a previous degree with studies relevant to the major/minor teaching areas offered at Curtin. The course can be completed with major teaching area only, or with a major and a minor teaching area. The selected major teaching area will be dependent on having successfully completed previous studies equivalent to a total of 3/4 of a year of successful EFTSL, comprising sequential discipline study. This equates to 6 units, with no more than 2 at first year level and no fewer than 2 units at third year level. If a minor teaching is also sought, successful completion of studies equivalent to a total of half a year of successful EFTSL, comprising sequential discipline study, is also required. This equates to 4 units, with no more than 2 at first year level. The Master of Teaching (Primary) requires a previous degree with studies equivalent to at least one year FTE in an area relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary curriculum. The following specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met: The required standard for Literacy and Numeracy skills for graduate teachers as prescribed by the Australian ITSL. This will be determined through sitting the national LANTITE tests, at a specified point during the degree. These tests are provided through an external body and students must meet the cost of sitting the tests. Applicants will also be required to engage in testing of non-academic attributes in order to assess their suitability to teaching. Students will be responsible for meeting any costs associated with this assessment process.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
