Course Overview
The General English course develops students' confidence in using English when living, studying or working in an English-speaking environment. Students should choose this course if they would like the enjoyment and stimulation of improving their English in a modern university environment. General English is offered at three levels; Basic, Intermediate and Proficient. Students will be placed in an appropriate level suited to their current English ability. This is achieved by taking our placement test or providing English language proficiency results upon application. After completing the following levels, a graduate of this course can: develop English language and English language writing skills appropriate for producing texts at the required level of proficiency, manipulate grammatical structures to communicate effectively at the required level of proficiency, demonstrate independent learning through reflection and active learning techniques, distinguish between main and supporting ideas in a spoken or written text at the required level of proficiency, produce spoken utterances and interactions at the required level of proficiency, negotiate meaning with other users of English at the required level of proficiency.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Entry requirements for each level within the General English course are as follows: Basic 1 - IELTS < 3.0 overall or equivalent, Basic 2 - IELTS 3.0 overall or equivalent, Intermediate 1 - IELTS 4.0 overall or equivalent, Intermediate 2 - IELTS 4.5 overall or equivalent, Intermediate 3 - IELTS 5 overall or equivalent, Intermediate 4 - IELTS 5.5 overall or equivalent, Proficient 1 - IELTS 6 overall or equivalent.
Course Entry/Completion Note
Students complete the course once they have achieved the level of language proficiency they require. This is indicated by an assessment which students qualify for based on their classwork and can be taken every two weeks.
Course Organisation
Seven levels of study are offered which take a recommended number of modules to complete (each module takes 1 week): Basic 1 - 10 modules, Basic 2 - 10 modules, Intermediate 1 - 10 modules, Intermediate 2 - 10 modules, Intermediate 3 - 15 modules, Intermediate 4 - 15 modules, Proficient 1 - 15 modules. Each module consists of 23 academic hours of study: 19 hours of language lessons and 4 hours of electives.
Duration and Availability
The course has weekly intakes of students and takes a recommended length of time to complete. The recommended time will depend upon the students' starting level of English and their target level. Actual time taken to complete the course depends on how quickly students achieve the level of language proficiency they require. The recommended time to complete could be up to 75 weeks for a student starting at the lowest level with the highest exit requirement.
