314674 v.1 Master of Engineering Science (Electrical Engineering)

Course CRICOS Code: 078135G
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 2 Years

Course Overview

Master degrees (coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.

This course is designed to allow a graduate in electrical engineering to proceed to further studies in a particular field by means of advanced coursework and a project. This course offers streams in Embedded Systems, Emerging Power Systems, and Telecommunications and Networking. Under the guidance of the course coordinator optional units can provide specialisation in areas not covered by the main streams. A one-year, design project must be undertaken to demonstrate technical knowledge and professional skills at postgraduate level.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a bachelor degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma.

Specifically, applicants requrie a bachelor of engineering degree in electronic, communications, electrical, electrical power or computer systems from a recognised university. The degree must include topics on circuit theory, computer programming, probability theory and electronic design. The Head of Department will consider applications from other graduates in engineering on a case-by-case basis.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Further information can be found at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au.

Pathway to Further Study

Graduates may qualify for entry to doctoral degrees. For further details, see the University website http://curtin.edu.au.

Course Organisation

Master degrees (coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.

The course requires three units (75 credits) per semester for a total of four semesters.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply electrical engineering theory and its design method to investigate and solve significant technological problems

2. analyse a problem and apply research and creative thinking to the formulation of a solution; implement and verify the solution using state of the art tools and techniques

3. find, evaluate, organise and present information relevant to electrical engineering research activities

4. communicate concepts and technical information to lay and professional personnel in written, oral and electronic forms

5. use software and hardware tools in a proficient way to analyse and verify electrical and electronic systems

6. recognise the rapid development of electrical and electronic technologies, and maintain currency via a spirit of inquiry and relevant further study

7. apply international standards, practices and conventions appropriate to electrical engineering

8. function effectively within a typical multidisciplinary and multi-cultural engineering design team as a team member, manager or team leader, recognising individual human rights

9. commit to and behave in accordance with the professional and ethical responsibilities of engineering postgraduates
