Course Overview

Graduate diplomas prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.


This Curtin University Corrosion Engineering Course is unique to the region and offers an opportunity to study from your home location. This course provides an advanced professional qualification for graduates in engineering or science disciplines.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Applicants generally require a bachelor degree or graduate certificate.


Specifically, applicants require a recognised bachelor degree in engineering or science with equivalent of first year Chemistry.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course:

Course Organisation

Graduate diplomas contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.


Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply corrosion theories and principles to account for corrosion causes, failures and prevention strategies

2. analyse a range of practical corrosion-related problems (case-studies) or situations potentially impacted by corrosion and propose viable and/or creative solutions

3. acquire relevant corrosion-related data from the literature and other sources, and interpret or re-interpret the data in synthesising practical reports

4. use professional language and technically accurate written work to effectively communicate with corrosion engineers, operators and managers

5. describe the corrosion characteristics of engineering materials, corrosion testing methods, prevention technologies, and explain their strength and limitations

6. demonstrate self-reliance, motivation and initiative in planning and managing own learning

7. describe major international corrosion prevention standards and practices, and their differences

8. be aware of the cultural impact of engineering or related operations

9. demonstrate behaviours which support and uphold expectations of practicing engineers and the engineering profession


Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is two years part-time study. Each student will be advised of their individual study plan, which will be subject to the availability and sequencing of units within the program. Two intakes are offered each year, in semester 1 and semester 2. However, students commencing in the Semester 2 intake requires a minimum of five semesters to complete the course.
