Course Overview

Bachelor honours degrees prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional work, research and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.


This course enables students to extend their knowledge of current academic research methodology in the following major areas of study; Chemistry, Computer Science, Environment, Coastal and Marine Science and Agriculture, Geology, Geophysics, Geographic Information Systems, Mathematical Sciences and Physics. This will be demonstrated through studying a specialised methodology unit, units in their specialised area and the conduct of a supervised research project and presentation of an honours dissertation


Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials. Students may require a laboratory coat.

Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au and include flexible entry pathways. Admission to Honours is by invitation and follows high achievement in an appropriate bachelor degree.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Pathway to Further Study

Course Organisation

Bachelor honours degrees typically comprise an honours course equivalent to one year of full-time study, which is additional to the associated bachelor degree.


Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. understand scientific principles, concepts and method and apply these in the context of their chosen area of study

2. think critically, creatively and reflectively to generate innovative scientific solutions to their chosen area of study through research

3. appreciate and competently use information technology and a variety of tools to retrieve manipulate transform and present data and information

4. communicate effectively through the written word and by oral presentation within the ethical and professional framework of their chosen area of study

5. use established and emerging technologies in their chosen field and apply them within the context of their profession

6. appreciate the importance of continuous education and training within their chosen field and take control of their own learning and development

7. appreciate that Science is an international discipline with varying perspectives as will be demonstrated in the diversity of opinion identified while undertaking research

8. understand the global and cultural issues within their chosen area of study and how these impact on the practice of their profession

9. be able to work as an independent scientist and within teams either as a professional leader or collaborator using effective problem solving and decision making skills within the professional context of their area of study


Duration and Availability

This course is one year full-time study. Two intakes are offered each year in March and August. Prospective students should note that places may not always be available for the August intake.
