Curtin Advantage

This unit is set up as a working company with all relevant departments and divisions that exist in a multi-tiered corporate environment. The only difference is that employees are Curtin students and members from the community who volunteer their time in return for experience in the field of their choice. These participants are coached, trained and directed by dedicated Curtin staff and mentored by volunteers from industry and government. University students receive a targeted experience that allows them to transfer skills they have learnt throughout their degree into practice. The program also provides industry placements and internships in a range of disciplines.

Curtin Entrepreneurship and Innovation Initiative, run by Curtin Advantage, is designed to blur the boundaries between Curtin students and the entrepreneurial community around them. This program offers something to everyone, with the flexibility to cater to students who are just beginning to discover entrepreneurial traits through to those who are actually preparing for the task of starting their own company.

Curtin Advantage has its own small business incubator set up to link students with real business ideas into entrepreneurship networks within the state and help them to develop their ideas into working propositions.

Student Relations

Curtin is dedicated to supporting students, providing networking opportunities and celebrating the achievements of students and staff. The Student Relations area supports orientation and the First Year Experience program. Student Relations also acts as a reference point for students concerned about services and programs at the University, confidential appointments welcome.

Service Abroad

Curtin’s strategic priorities include the development of partnerships with overseas universities to enhance student study abroad opportunities. Partnerships have been formed in the USA with Southern Methodist University, Texas; Elon University, North Carolina; Kalamazoo College, Michigan; Tulane University, Louisiana; Trinity College, Connecticut and Simpson College, Iowa. Students from Scandinavia participate in a slightly different program.

Some come to Curtin to undertake a "gap" year between secondary school and university, while others come for their master thesis year and spend time working with community based organisations undertaking project work and gathering data for their thesis. Such students are referred to as Service Abroad students, rather than study abroad.

Another aspect of Service Abroad is the Asia Study Tour that runs for approximately three weeks in both January/February and November/December each year with both local and overseas students participating. Each study tour visits at least three culturally diverse Asian countries, characterised by rapidly growing human populations, increasing population movement and expectations of accelerating economic development.
