Syllabus: An understanding of management principles and perspectives vital to a mine manager's successful running of a mining enterprise is gained in this unit. Covers advanced applications in risk management, as well as occupational health and safety legislation. Managing mines component: theory and processes of management, financial and resource budgeting and control. Management information systems and reporting, human behaviour and industrial relations. Contracts and contractors, management of joint ventures, management in an internal context. Professional ethics, team dynamics. Mining law and risk management component: modern mining law including: Occupational Health and Safety Law (OHS): OHS Act, mine specific legislation, coal, metals, industrials, law governing mine managers. Advanced applications in risk management: human factors, quantitative risk assessment and decision making. Behaviours, errors, accident occurrence, ergonomics, fatigue, heat stress, rosters and FIFO. Major hazards in coal and metal mines, for example inrush: case studies of mine 'disasters', Sunshine, Gretley, Moura, Northparkes, Bronzewing, Westray and Emu. Emergency response training.
