Introduction

The Graduate Entry Master (GEM) course emphasises the close integration of evidence based theory and clinical practice. Theory content is comprehensive and includes the physical, biological, psychological and social sciences. The course is composed of 15 units. One unit is completed prior to the commencement of the course, with eights units completed in the first year, four units per semester. The second year of the course has six units overall with three units per semester. Five of the units have aclinical practice component; progression from the first to the final clinical unit demonstrates an increase in clinical hours and complexity in learning. Clinical practice involves a range of community and hospital settings. Student will be involved insupervised practice by registered nurses when providing care of individuals/families/groups; all clinical practice is appropriate to the level of academic preparation.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Australian Residents - A Bachelor degree in a related discipline or equivalent and have a demonstrated academic ability at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Essential pre-requisites include completion of a unit in anatomy and physiology or human biology and psychology at tertiary level.

Specific Requirements

Applicants will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Note

Evidence of completion of a Senior First Aid Certificate is required before commencement of the course. A Criminal Record Screening Check must be completed prior to commencement of the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning will be assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is offered internally over two years full time study or equivalent part-time. Bentley campus will offer intakes in early January and July each year.

Course Organisation

The course comprises 15 units. One preliminary unit is completed after which eight units are completed in the first year, 4 units per semester. The second year of the course has 6 units overall with 3 units per semester. It can also be completed part time at one, two, or three units per semester. Five of the units have a clinical practice component; progression from the first to the final clinical unit demonstrates an increase in clinical hours and complexity in learning. Student will be involved in supervised practice by registered nurses when providing care of individuals/families/groups; all clinical practice is appropriate to the level of academic preparation.

Professional Recognition

The course has been designed to meet the regulations of the Nursing and Midwifery Council competencies for initial registration as a nurse with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australian. The Master of Nursing Practice is being reviewed for accreditation following which students who successfully complete all the course requirements will be eligible for registration to practice as a nurse in Australia. The School should be contacted for updated information about course accreditation.

Career Opportunities

Nursing features in metropolitan, rural and remote settings. The graduate nurse may be able to practice as a beginning practitioner, competent to practice in a variety of health care contexts.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials. purchase a uniform for clinical practice.
