Introduction

This course will produce occupational health and safety professionals with strong theoretical and practical Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) skills in a range of disciplines. There is an emphasis on industry based assessment and the development of practical skills. Units are offered in the external mode with a short intensive on campus requirement for development of technical hands-on skills in occupational hygiene and ergonomics as well as to foster opportunities for networking and teamwork. This course attracts students from a wide variety of professions and industries from those who are already working in OHS and wish to gain formal qualifications to those intending to work in OHS including engineers, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physical eduaction/human movement science graduates, environmental health officers, teachers, chemists and many other occupations. The course aims to develop reserach skills and encourage graduates to discover new knowledge and novel ways ofsolving problems. Research skills will be demonstrated through the completion of an original research project in the field of OHS.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A Bachelor of Science degree plus two years of relevant post-qualification work experience. Work experience is assessed on the basis of level of seniority and responsibility, job description, work-based referee report, publications or other written reports, short courses or conference attendance.

Specific Requirements

Regular access to a computer and the internet will be required to undertake distance units. Unit materials are provided in electronic format via Blackboard.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is three semester's full - time or equivalent part-time study. This course is available by both internal and external study for Australian and International students. The course is available partially on-line and via face-to-face teaching. The practical unit will have a compulsory on-campus component during the semester break (4 days). International onshore students on student visas are not permitted to study externally.

Intermediate Awards 1

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management; Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

Course Organisation

This course consists of eight core units and selection of three optional units. It is recommended that Accident Prevention and Safety Management 581 and Risk Management and Safety Technology 582 are completed first. Research Project 650 is the final unitof the course. Other units can be completed in any order. The optional units provide the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of occupational health and safety. All units are offered in Distance Education mode except one unit (Occupational Exposure Measurement and Evaluation 581) that requires attendance at an on-campus session of 4 days. Students are provided with an opportunity to specialise and undertake research in occupational health, occupational hygiene, safety and risk management, ergonomics, occupational medicine or other related areas. Those demonstrating excellence in research will have the opportunity to continue to doctoral studies.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

#      Occupational Exposure Measurment and Evaluation 581 has pre-requisites of Ergonomics 594 and Occupational Hygiene and Chemical Safety 596 and requires on-campus attendance for a four day period in Semester Two.
*      Research Project 650 has a pre-requisite of Health Research Methods 681. This should be the final unit taken in this course.
