** The tuition pattern below provides details of the types of classes and their duration. This is to be used as a guide only. For more precise information please check your unit outline. **
Lecture: 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Laboratory: 1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Fieldwork: 1 x 4 Days Once-only
Syllabus: It is desirable that students will have completed Environmental Awareness 102 and a communication unit. Two areas of emphasis are identified: a general outline of the science of ecology and developing the skills to do ecological research. Areas covered include factors affecting the distribution and abundance of species (abiotic limitations, interspecific interactions, dispersal, habitat selection and anthropogenic influences) and the functioning of communities and ecosystems. Concepts and theory will be introduced and supported by contemporary examples. Skills in ecological research will be developed by conducting small research projects, following the scientific method of hypothesis testing, reviewing and interpreting scientific literature and presenting information in reports and posters.
** To ensure that the most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes appears, they will be provided in your unit outline prior to commencement. **
