Syllabus: Seeing the 'big picture': problem definition, brainstorming for solutions, performance specifications, power unit selection (IC engine, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric drives), engineering units and dimensions, concurrent force systems, equilibrium equations, basic properties of common engineering materials, stress/strain relationships, equivalent force/moment systems, velocity/acceleration/force analysis, equilibrium equations, torsional loading for shafts, beam stresses, beam deflections, combined static loading analysis using Mohr's circle, material failure theories, basic concepts of FEA (finite element analysis), fatigue, buckling, bolted and welded joint design, component design and analysis (shafts, gears, springs, belts, chain drives, bearings, couplings, keys, welds, bolts/fasteners), dimensioning, tolerancing, fits, CAD drawing preparation, project management, seminar presentation.
