Curtin University Scholarship Program

The 2008 Curtin University Scholarships Program continues to provide generous support through a diverse range of scholarships.

The program is geared both to recognising individual high achievement and to assisting students whose personal circumstances may impact on their university studies. It is continually revised to broaden its reach and introduce new schemes.

Curtin Academic Merit Full and Partial Scholarships - for students who have displayed high levels of academic achievement.

Curtin Access Scholarships - for students who may otherwise not have an opportunity to attend university due to educational, financial or other disadvantage (including Indigenous students, students from rural and regional areas and students with disabilities) - these scholarships complement the large number of Commonwealth Learning Scholarships available at Curtin (see below).

Engineering Merit Scholarships - for students who select a Curtin undergraduate engineering course as their first preference and score a TER of 95 and above - there is no application required, to be eligible, applicants must simply place Curtin as their first preference.

John Curtin Undergraduate Scholarships - for academically gifted students who have displayed vision, leadership and an outstanding commitment to serving the community - this scholarship also offers $6,000 towards an approved international study experience.

Study Abroad Scholarships - to assist students participating in an approved Student Exchange/Study Abroad program once they are studying at the University - scholarships range from $1000 to $4,000 as a one-off payment and does not cover any student contribution component.

Top TER Student Merit Award - the award will be given to the top TER student from every high school in Western Australia who enrolls at Curtin. Recipients receive a one-off $1000 cash payment unrelated to any other scholarship award.

Principal's Recommendation - In every WA high school the Principal may recommend the student who, for example through sustained effort or most improvement, is considered most likely to succeed in their studies and who enrols at Curtin. Recipients receive a one-off $1000 cash payment unrelated to any other scholarship award.

Curtin Alumni Scholarships - Curtin's Alumni Scholarships aim to foster a stronger sense of family at Curtin, and are available only to those students who have immediate family members who are graduates of Curtin or WAIT. Students receive $2000 pa educational costs allowance.

Specialised Scholarships

Aileen Plant Memorial Scholarship

To assist students who have a demonstrated interest in gaining qualifications in health sciences, in particular in Australian Indigenous public health issues.

Bev Corless Memorial Scholarship

For female students who show leadership potential and wish to pursue a career in engineering.

Charles Watson Scholarship

For students who wish to pursue a career in nursing and midwifery and who demonstrate leadership potential.

Chris Lewis Scholarship

For an Indigenous student who has demonstrated commitment to the Indigenous community and shows academic potential.

Elizabeth Jolley Memorial Scholarship

To encourage and reward young people who have demonstrated academic excellence through their TER and have an interest in pursuing a career in creative writing, professional writing, literary and cultural studies or performance studies.

Graham Lodwick Scholarship

For students from a rural or regional location who wish to study agriculture, mining or resources.

Harry Perkins Scholarship

For students completing Year 12 studies at a rural or regional high school who wish to undertake a degree in business at Curtin.

Hazel Hawke Scholarship

For mature age applicants whose financial circumstances might otherwise prevent them from undertaking university studies and who can demonstrate commitment to social and community issues.

John de Laeter Scholarship

For students who wish to undertake a degree in science, mathematics or computing - the scholarships will be awarded to the prospective student with the best overall academic performance in physics or chemistry and one of the upper secondary mathematics subjects.

Lillian Passmore Donovan Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship is open to Indigenous Australians committed to pursuing a career in social work.

Commonwealth Scholarships

These scholarships are funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training to assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS)

These scholarships are available to Australian citizens or holders of a permanent humanitarian visa to assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds who are from rural and regional areas. The scholarships are offered each year to cover accommodation costs and have a value of $4,324 per annum (2008 value) for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study.

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS)

These scholarships are available to Australian citizens or holders of a permanent humanitarian visa to assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds with general education costs. The scholarships are offered each year and have a value of $2,162 per annum (2008 value) for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study.

OS-HELP Loan

OS-HELP allows eligible students to access a loan to help with the cost of studies undertaken overseas (travel, living expenses or tuition fees), as part of their Australian degree.

Higher Degree by Research Scholarships

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and Curtin University Postgraduate Scholarships (CUPS) These awards are available to Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand citizens who have completed four years of higher education studies to a high level (Honours 1 or equivalent). The scholarship is valued at $19,616 pa (2007 value), tax-free and is indexed annually. The scholarship is tenable for a period of two years to undertake a master degree by research and three years for a doctoral degree. Applications open 1st August and close 31st October each year. Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS)

These scholarships are available to outstanding overseas postgraduate research students for study in Australia. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified overseas graduates eligible to commence a higher degree by research.

The scholarship covers tuition fees at an Australian higher education institution for a period of two years for a master degree by research or three years for a doctoral degree. It includes Overseas Student Health Cover for the recipient and dependants. Curtin will provide a Curtin University Postgraduate Scholarships (CUPS) to the top two ranked applicants, valued at $19,616 per annum (2007 value). Applications open 1st July and close 31st August each year. Curtin International Research Tuition Scholarships (CIRTS)

These scholarships are available to outstanding overseas postgraduate research students for study in Australia. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified overseas graduates eligible to commence a higher degree by research.

The scholarship covers the tuition fees for the chosen degree at Curtin University of Technology for a period of two years for a master degree by research or three years for a doctoral degree. It includes a living allowance (minimum of $19,616 per annum (2007 value) tax-free). Applications open 1st July and close 31st August each year.
