Introduction

The product and furniture design major provides students with the opportunity to apply their ingenuity, intellectual abilities and practical skills through designing in three dimensions. Project-based activities develop design processes that encompass current and projected future needs through individual thoughts, concepts and ideals. Students develop their understanding and application of designing products and furniture with an expanded knowledge of technology, professional communication skills and applying creative rationale. Components of the third-year program are self-directed, enabling career and further study directions to be explored. This design major is directed towards employment outcomes in the creative industries sector.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

As current Design entry requirements.

Duration and Availability

Entry on completion of Design first year two semesters 200 credits. Two years four semesters 400 credits full time study. Part time study available to local students.

Course Organisation

Entry on completion of BA Design first year two semesters 200 credits. The Product & Furniture Design Major consists of sixteen 25 credit units completed over two years and includes two optional units in the third year. Prerequisite units from semestersone and two are from the preceding year. This allows mid second year entry subject to completion of all first year units. Progression through the course is subject to completion of prerequisite units. Part time study is possible but requires an agreed study plan with the coordinator.

Professional Recognition

Graduates may apply to be members of the professional body representing design internationally or in their country: Australia - Design Industry Association (DIA); America - Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA); UK - Chartered Society of Designers (CSD).

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
