193307 v.5 Postgraduate Diploma in Geophysics

PGradDipGeophys(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 042208C
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 1 Year

Introduction

This award is a specialist program in advanced geophysical exploration. It is offered to professional geophysicists and geophysics graduates who wish to extend their knowledge in advanced techniques through a formal course of study. Graduates of this course may also continue on to the master and PhD awards. Fieldwork, laboratory-based workshops and projects provide the opportunities to develop data acquisition, processing and interpretational skills.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor degree in geophysics or a Graduate Diploma in Geophysics.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Recognition of prior learning in the course may be granted where candidates possess particular work experience or qualifications deemed to be relevant and appropriate. However, such students may be required to undertake refresher background studies as part of their coursework. Such background studies may be similar to those offered in the Graduate Diploma course.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is one year full-time or two years part-time study.

Course Organisation

The course structure is comprised of the following: advanced studies in geophysics - one to four full units; advanced geophysics workshop/project - two to six full units; background studies - maximum of two full units; electives - maximum of three full units (in consultation with the course coordinator). A compulsory dissertation unit is chosen in consultation with the course coordinator or Head of Department. The optional units listed are only an example of units that can be taken. Other units are available following consultation with the course coordinator or Head of Department.

Professional Recognition

The Commonwealth Public Service Board accepts the Postgraduate Diploma in Geophysics as satisfying its requirements for appointment as a professional geophysicist. A degree in geophysics satisfies the academic requirements for membership to The Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicist, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (USA) and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
