Syllabus:

Study of narrative as a genre through the reading of various narrative texts - short and long prose, fiction, including popular sub-genres such as fantasies, history of the genre and its relationship to cultural change. The contexts of modernity and postmodernity in contemporary texts, fiction, science fiction, detective fiction, film and historical narratives will be explored. On successful completion of this unit, students will have gained an understanding of the concept of narrative in relation to culture and theory and will have read a range of genres in relation to the above concepts, examined the concept of cultural instrumentality and gained an understanding of the key terms informing the field of narrative.
