Introduction

The Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) provides students with the knowledge and skills to become professional chemists in analytical, research and industrial laboratories. The Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) prepares graduates for professional work in the development, design and operation of processes and plant for the extraction, conversion and recovery of materials. The combination of the two degree programs provides graduates with special abilities to work at the interface between the two disciplines in research and development of new processes and specialised plant.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE Applicable Mathematics and two out of TEE Calculus/Physics/Chemistry. Well-performed candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake an additional program of preparatory studies.

Specific Requirements

To satisfy professional requirements, students must complete at least 12 weeks of approved work experience associated with engineering in industry. Students may make their own arrangements for employment or seek the assistance of Careers and Prospective Students Service. As one objective of this work is to make theoretical studies in courses more meaningful, it must be done during the period that the student is undertaking those studies, ie it is to be done in vacations, or in employment as a part-time student, rather than after all course work has been completed. Students are strongly urged to consider the 12 weeks a minimum and to undertake as much additional work experience as they can. Students are required to submit a report covering the work carried out. Further details regarding the work/report required are available from the various engineering schools. A current certificate of successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before a degree will be awarded. The STAT is not acceptable for entry to this course.

Note

Well-performed candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake an additional program of preparatory studies. Selection is based primarily on Tertiary Entrance Rank.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is five years full-time study or equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in March and August. Prospective students should note that places may not always be available for the August intake.

Intermediate Awards

There is no intermediate award. However, students may switch to either degree program at the end of Year One with no time loss.

Course Organisation

The structure of Engineering, Science and Computing owned double degrees is such that students have the option of completing the component Engineering, Science or Computing degree in the minimum time, provided they elect to change from the double degree within the first two semesters of the course.

Professional Recognition

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute, the Institution of Chemical Engineers and Engineers Australia recognises the course as fulfilling the academic requirements for graduate membership. On obtaining the necessary experience graduates will be admitted to membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and for corporate membership of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and Engineers Australia.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.

Special Note

The curriculum was revised during 2003 and the revised program will be phased in from 2004 to 2007. Information on the original course structure and units for students who commenced this course prior to 2004 is available by consulting the 2003 Curtin Courses Handbook. Students who commenced prior to and who are continuing in this double degree program from 2003 have the choice to graduate in the chemistry component with either a Bachelor of Science (Applied Chemistry) or Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) award subject to approval by the Head of Department.
