Introduction

This course provides health professionals with a broad and sound foundation in biological and behavioural sciences, the principles of teaching and learning and best practice management of diabetes. Graduates will have the capacity to advance diabetes education, guide clinical practice and prepare for projects and research in the diabetes field.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A relevant bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised institution. An alternate mode of entry is available for health professionals without a degree, but with substantiative work experience.

Specific Requirements

Applicants studying Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542 should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Applicants currently credentialed as a Diabetes Educator with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association should apply for recognition of prior learning in Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is one year full-time or two-years part-time study and is available externally only.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education (completion of Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542) may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School. For further definition refer to the Statement and Awards section under General Information.

Course Organisation

Students are required to participate in clinical practice (2 x 10 days) as part of Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542. Health Contract 590 must be completed in the final semester of study.

Professional Recognition

This course has the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Accreditation 2003 - 2007. Graduates may be able to use this course as evidence to support an application for credentialing with ADEA.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.

Students are required to have and maintain reliable internet access and pay for the cost of obtaining and using internet access as part of their studies.
