Syllabus:

Building - Building materials and construction methods, planning, site evaluation and classification, system building and the function of buildings, interpretation of plans and specifications. Operation of the building industry. Principal control authorities. Technical drawing and interpretation of drawings. Health and safety - lighting, heating ventilation, insulation, fire safety, design features for disaster prone areas. Town planning - environmental health. Building contract theory, liabilities, andsafety provisions. Principles and statutory controls for demolition. Statutory references to town planning, local authorities. Aspects of population geography and urban geography in relation to problems of environmental health. Topic areas within physical geography related to urban and rural land use. Maps and air photo interpretation. An introduction to geographic information systems. Field exercises. The composition of waste, collection, treatment and disposal techniques. Site selection and evaluation with focus on aspects of environmental and public health significance. Recycling and waste minimisation. Statutory controls.
