300277 v.4 Electronic and Communication Engineering

Introduction

The electronics and communication fields represent two of the fastest growing technology areas in both Australia and internationally and job opportunities in these fields abound. With the rapid progress of the information society, the role of communications is becoming even more crucial to increased industry efficiency and competitiveness. The reason lies in the decentralisation of computing power in both the office and factory environment and the ability of specialised communication networks to link all geographically and spatially separated elements. Most of us are familiar with the everyday agents of change in the electronics and communication driven revolution. These include transaction processing at banks and 'point of sale' supermarket outlets, electronic funds transfer, electronic mail, electronically automated booking systems for airlines and theatrical, or sporting events, office and factory automation, together with intelligent home appliances. This course meets an ever increasing demand for professional engineering expertise in the area of electronics and communications with Australia currently unable to fully satisfy its own specialised demand for electronic designers.
