Introduction


This award is a conversion course to geophysics for graduates with a Bachelors degree in geology, physics, mathematics, engineering or surveying. It is not for geophysics graduates. It involves course work appropriate to the particular student's needs as an introduction to all areas of geophysics. Graduates of this course may continue on to the Postgraduate Diploma in Geophysics for advanced training.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites


A Bachelors degree in geology, physics, mathematics, engineering or surveying. Students are advised by the Geophysics Course Coordinator which units are required for course completion.

Recognition of Prior Learning


Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability


This fee paying course is of one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation


The course structure is comprised of the following - Advanced Studies in Geophysics - one to four full units, Advanced Geophysics Workshop/Project - two to six full units, Background Studies - maximum of two full units, Electives - maximum of three full units (in consultation with the Course Coordinator). A dissertation unit is chosen in consultation with the Course Coordinator or Head of Department. The optional units listed are only an example of units that can be taken. Other units are available following consultation with the Course Coordinator or Head of Department.

Professional Recognition


The Commonwealth Public Service Board accepts the Graduate Diploma in Geophysics as satisfying it's requirements for appointment as a professional geophysicists. A degree in geophysics satisfies the academic requirements for membership of The Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (USA) and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.

Additional Course Expenses


Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
