190107 v.2 Postgraduate Diploma in Visual Arts

PGradDipVisArts(Curtin)

Introduction

The course provides the opportunity to develop individual initiatives and creative capacities in any of the major studies offered within the Department of Art. It is designed to extend undergraduate program studies and to provide vocational and mid-career studio training. The course consists of individually negotiated studio programs, undertaken with a common core of theoretical studies, providing for the development of critical and research skills in specific areas of interest.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree or its equivalent in any of the related disciplines of visual arts. Applications are considered from candidates whose standing as visual arts practitioners or educators recommends them as being capable of undertaking and benefiting from postgraduate studio studies. All applicants are interviewed and required to submit a study proposal supported by a folio of work. The quality of the study proposal, the supporting evidence of skills, competence and creative capacities are factors in establishing entry. Applicants are advised to seek early consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator before submitting a study proposal.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Exemption from some postgraduate diploma work may be granted on the basis of substantial relevant practice in visual arts, or passes in relevant graduate units.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. A limited number of places are available each year in the course. While it is possible that all study areas may be available in any one year, the selection of applicants is based upon an evaluation of the applicants study proposal, the capacity to bring it to a successful conclusion and the School's ability to support and supervise the work.

Course Organisation

The student, in consultation with an appointed staff supervisor, constructs a program based upon the submitted study proposal. The course consists of project units relating to the individual's studio program and associated theoretical studies.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
