Area: Department of Environment and Agriculture
Credits: 25.0
Contact Hours: 6.0
Lecture: 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Tutorial: 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Laboratory: 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Syllabus: Molecular biology is the central and common core of all living organisms and is encapsulated in the concept of the Central Dogma and its (minor) variants. All organisms can be described via; their DNA sequence - the unit will describe the genome and methods of determine genome sequence. Their gene content - the unit will describe genes, how they are studied and how they can be manipulated; the transcriptome - the content of RNA transcribed from the DNA, the unit will describe transcription, how it is controlled, studied and measured; the proteome - the complement of proteins in a cell, the unit will describe protein translation, how it is controlled studies and measured. This unit will cover these four areas and will also demonstrate key analytical techniques (PCR, cloning, expression) that underpin all other areas of biology.
