Area: Curtin Sarawak
Credits: 25.0
Contact Hours: 3.0
Seminar: 1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Prerequisite(s): 312658 (v.1) People and Cultures of Borneo 101
Syllabus: This unit will examine the main political and economic features of Borneo, especially in relation to the centre-periphery relations that have continuously shaped its inherent nations and states, and their respective governance. The historiography of Borneo will also be addressed to establish how the re-writing of Borneo history at various points in time has influenced these complex centre-periphery relations. This will subsequently enable the mapping of Borneo's contemporary political and economic landscape, especially in terms of how relationships between nations, states and the communities within have been formulated and evolved over time, on the basis of political exigencies, economic development precedence and cyclical policy-making priorities. Majorthemes to be covered in this unit include the impact of tribal divisions, border trade, state- and nation-building motivations as catalysts for change in the socio-political "construction" of contemporary Borneo.
