Syllabus: This unit considers the range of organisational, social, and environmental goals that may be included in the concept of “Business Performance.” We consider the need to achieve alignment between an organisation’s overall strategic objectives and the specific goals for business performance adopted in the organisation. We consider three management activities that most directly and significantly impact an organisation’s ability to achieve its business performance goals: (i) design of organisation processes (including sourcing arrangements, decision-making processes, and incentive schemes); (ii) design of effective information systems; and (iii) implementation of organisational systems for knowledge management and continuous organisational learning. To address these concerns, we adopt a systems theoretic perspective on organisations that incorporates important human and organisational behavioural concerns. From these perspectives we derive a set of system design principles for designing and managing organisations to achieve high levels of business performance.
