311148 v.4 Bachelor of Science (Science)

BSc(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 061600D
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 3 Years

Introduction

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue their interest in science by choosing a single major or a combination of two majors in the following areas of study: Agriculture; Applied Mathematics and Statistics; Biochemistry; Chemistry; Coastal Zone Management; Environmental Biology; Mathematical Sciences and Computing; Mathematical Sciences and Finance; Multidisciplinary Science; Nanotechnology; and Physics, and Chemistry and Earth Science. The Multidisciplinary Science Major has been specifically designed for students with interests across a broad range of science areas and can only be taken with the Extended Multidisciplinary Stream. The Nanotechnology Major is a highly prescribed major and cannot be combined with other majors. It includes content across the three disciplines of physics, chemistry and molecular biology. The Mathematical Sciences and Finance and the Mathematical Sciences and Computing, and the Chemsitry and Earth Science are prescribed double majors. Graduates emerge from this course with a comprehensive foundation in their chosen area of science and are prepared for a range of employment opportunities. Those that excel are well prepared to further their knowledge through our honours and research programs.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

The Physical Sciences and Mathematical and Computational Sciences pre-majors, require TEE Applicable Mathematics or Mathematics 3C/3D or Mathematics: Specialist 3C/3D and TEE level or Level 3A/3B in their chosen area of specialisation e.g. Chemistry or Physics. The Environment and Agriculture pre-major has no pre-requisites. At least one TEE science or Course of Study subject and one TEE mathematics or Course of Study subject are desirable OR one science course and at least Mathematics 2C/2D are desirable. The Multidisciplinary Science Pre-Major requires at least one TEE science subject or COS at Level 3A/3B and at least TEE Discrete Mathematics or Mathematics 2C/2D. Mathematics 3C/3D is desirable.

Specific Requirements

The STAT is only accepted for entry into the Environment and Agriculture Pre-major or for students undertaking the Multidisciplinary Science Pre-major. Elements E, V and Q are considered. It is not accepted for any other Pre-major. It may be used to meet University English competency requirements combined with other relevant qualifications.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is of three years duration full-time or the equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in March and July.

Course Organisation

In the first year students must choose at least one of the following pre-majors: Physical Sciences Pre-major - appropriate for Chemistry, Physics, Nanotechnology, Biochemistry, and the Chemistry and Earth Science Double Major; Mathematical and Computational Sciences Pre-major - appropriate for Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematical Science and Computing Double Major and the Mathematical Science and Finance Double Major; Environment and Agriculture Pre-major - appropriate for Agriculture, Coastal Zone Management, Environmental Biology and Biochemistry; Multidisciplinary Science Pre-Major - appropriate for Multidisciplinary Science only. Students wishing to complete a double major must ensure that they complete the necessary prerequisites units for both majors by careful choice of electives. Students who choose to complete only a single major in a discipline area must complete the streams or extended stream in that discipline.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of this course may be eligible for membership in the relevant society or institute of their chosen area of study. Further details can be obtained from the course coordinator.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Special Note

A Science & Engineering Enabling Course is available for those students who do not meet Curtin University entrance requirements. This allows students to not only meet Curtin entrance but also to study all prerequisites required for further study in the areas of engineering, science, health and information technology. The Biochemistry Major is new and is still under construction. Please contact the course coordinator for details.

Course Structure Disclaimer

Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
