Syllabus: This unit covers basic concepts in biology. Plants and animals are examined in a phylogenetic context with examples of the taxonomy and evolutionary history of the various groups. It involves comparative approach, which explores the diversity of mechanisms, processes and responses with which plants and animals meet the common requirements for species survival (reproduction, development, obtaining energy, gas exchange and interactions with the external environment). This unit includes a significant laboratory component where students will be exposed to a wide range of techniques used to study both plants and animals.
