Introduction

This course combines the financial and economic resource sector focus of the Master program in Mineral Economics with the Curtin Master of Business Administration (MBA), which is of world-class quality having been internationally accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBAs). The Curtin MBA also ranks within the top 100 MBAs in the world (The Economist Which MBA? survey). The course will provide students with a thorough foundation in resource sector management and contemporary business theories. Emphasis is also placed on the creation and critical evaluation of innovative ideas and strategies within ambiguous and contemporary business environments. The curriculum has a highly applied practical focus and is delivered by leading academics and business practitioners. It seeks to equip graduates with a range of analytical and managerial skills that are suitable for senior management and decision making roles in resources, mining and energy companies.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or equivalent, and at least three years relevant work experience. Selection, which is competitive, will be based on a range of information including grades achieved in previous study, referee reports, relevance of work experience, career aspirations and test results. Applicants are required to submit referee reports and a CV. Interviews may also be required. Applicants with three or more years of relevant work experience and who have completed four units of the Graduate Certificate in Business with an average grade or 70 per cent or better may be offered entry to this double master degree in Mineral and Energy Economics and Business Administration. Well-performing candidates without an appropriate background may be admitted but will be required to complete appropriate bridging and special course units as prescribed. In certain cases, the need to complete these special units may result in an extension of studies beyond the length of the course.

Specific Requirements

The Graduate Board of Examiners requires, unless there are exceptional circumstances, that those with more than two failures in the course or more than four units with grades below 60 per cent be excluded from the course, so as to maintain the high standard expected of such a prestigious qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is equivalent to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study in trimesters and intensive study periods with flexible package formats. Normal entry is at the beginning of the calendar year (trimester 1), but May and September entry is also possible (trimester 2 and 3).

Course Organisation

Some units in this course are typically delivered in a blended mode which involves face to face instruction in eight day intensive modular blocks. Other units are available in trimester and flexible package formats. Students must complete 450 credits and a minimum of 40 hours of professional development to graduate with this double degree.

Student may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.

Prospective students intending to commence this course from 2010 should consult the Department of Mineral and Energy Economics within the Curtin Graduate School of Business to discuss possible changes to course completion requirements.
