Syllabus: Solid State Chemistry: Packing of ions in solids; Typical AX, AX2 and selected crystal structures; Lattice defects; Non- stoichiometric compounds; Thermodynamics; Substitutional; interstitial, and subtractional and non-stoichiometric phases; Fundamentalsof Corrosion Chemistry : Electrochemistry background, conductivity, cells; Standard and non- standard potentials - the Nernst equation; Electrochemical Kinetics, current voltage relationships; Metals, alloys and corrosion; Localised Corrosion and Electrochemical Heterogeneity; Passivity and Corrosion Control; Introduction to Minerals Processing; Overview of local hydrometallurgical processes; Dissolution of minerals; Leaching methods; Electrochemistry of leaching - mixed potentials etc; Electrowinning, electrodeposition;
