Introduction

This course develops expertise in the area of health promotion with an additional focus on health and safety. The areas of study will include health promotion skills such as planning, evaluation and methods as well as workplace occupational hygiene, legal matters and hazard recognition. Graduates will develop complementary skills that will qualify them to work in the field of health promotion particularly within a workplace setting. It emphasises prevention of disease and the importance of creating healthy environments and is particularly relevant for jobs in government, community and workplace environments, where the focus is on implementing systems that promote a safe and healthy work environment.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

At least one course from the Science Learning Area#. Human Biology and Applicable Mathematics or Discrete Mathematics desirable. STAT. Written English and MC Verbal or Quantitative. # Earth and Environmental Science (stage 3 for 2010); or TEE subjects: Biology; Human Biology; Chemistry; Physical Science or Physics satisfies this requirement.

STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q. STAT applicants will be required to meet entry pre-requisites by completing enabling units. This study may extend the duration of the course. Applicants for this course should refer to the Clinical Health Sciences section (see page 36) and Police Clearances (see page 5).

Note

Students will normally be expected to have attained a higher Tertiary Entrance Rank than is required for both single degrees.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is four years' full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

Students enrolled in the double degree program may elect to transfer to a single degree course in one of the two disciplines. In this event, the relevant Head of School shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degree.

Professional Recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Health Promotion Association (Health Promotion) and membership to the Safety Institute of Australia (Health and Safety).

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
