Graphics as a communication medium. Theories of graphics communication. Principles of colour and colour description systems. Colour conventions in cartography. Cognitive mapping. Space perception. Space representation in graphics. Gestalt theories. Figure and ground relationships. General principles of design - viz layout, balance, aesthetics and rules.
