Syllabus:

This unit covers the biochemical investigation of abnormalities in electrolyte, carbohydrate, cholesterol, calcium, haem, and porphyrin metabolism; biochemical markers of cardiac, pancreatic and liver function and/or damage. In the specific context of analytical techniques, lectures and practicals cover quality control, use of radio-isotopes, and the physico-chemical principles underlying clinical biochemistry tests/techniques such as chromatography, enzymology, electrophoresis, fluorimetry, nephelometry and turbidimetry, and ligand binding assays (for example, immuno and receptor assays).
