Introduction
The course is designed for practising dietitians who would like to upgrade their dietetic qualification to Masters level. It provides for higher level learning in various areas where dietitians are employed (health promotion, public health nutrition, sports nutrition and cardiovascular units) or involving skills that dietitians require (eg counselling), and encourages dietetic research in the workplace.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Applicants must have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics at Curtin or equivalent and preferably have worked as a dietician before undertaking this course.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are encouraged from applicants and are assessed on an individual basis. Dietitians who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics or equivalent will receive recognition of prior learning up to 200 credits.
Duration and Availability
The course is one and a half years full-time, or one year full-time with the final half-year available as part-time equivalent. International onshore students on student visas are not permitted to study part-time.
Course Organisation
The course is designed to provide specialist training in an area of dietetic practice, for example health promotion, public health nutrition, sports nutrition and cardiovascular units. In addition, a research project in an area associated with the applicant's workplace is undertaken after completing an appropriate unit in epidemiology and biostatistics. In exceptional circumstances, the project may be undertaken outside a clinical setting.
Professional Recognition
Dietitians who undertake this course are participating in continuing education, as required by the Accredited Practising Dietitian program of the Dietitians Association of Australia.
Career Opportunities
Dietitians find work in a variety of areas. This qualification will facilitate training in several specialist areas of dietetics and foster research within these areas.
