Introduction

This double degree in Asian Studies and Secondary Education combines studies in education with studies in an Asian language, culture and society. The course is pre-service and provides qualifications for those intending to teach at the secondary level ofeducation. It prepares graduates to teach students aged 12 years and over in secondary schools.

Specific Requirements

Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening and Clearance Section of this publication. STAT elements considered are E and V and Q.

Note

Students will normally be expected to have attained a higher Tertiary Entrance Rank than is required for both single degrees.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study. A limited number of units are available in the external study mode. Most language units are available in the internal mode only.

Course Organisation

Students enrol in the Secondary Education major and select a major in Chinese (Mandarin), Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Asian Studies or TESOL. Students enrolled in the double degree program may elect to transfer to a single degree course in one of the two areas. In this event, the relevant Head of Department shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degree.

Professional Recognition

Relevant professional recognition is granted on the same basis as to graduates of the component single degrees.

Graduates find careers in areas such as schools, colleges, public relations, advertising, media management, library and information services, web publishing and broadcasting in multi-national companies, government departments and public institutions, especially in an international context.
