301387 v.3 Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Sciences), Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education)

BSc(Curtin), BEd(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 041792A
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 4 Years

Introduction

Provides graduates with skills and qualifications to practice as a scientist in industry and/or as a teacher in secondary schools. Provides opportunities to combine rigorous study in a Mathematics the major, with support studies in another teaching area of their choice. Designed to give graduates a comprehensive foundation in the mathematical sciences and the necessary skills for effective classroom communication at the secondary school level. The solid foundation in the mathematical sciences will offer graduates employment other than in teaching, such as employment in government departments and authorities, research organisations and business and industry. The intent is to produce graduates with teaching skills and a sound foundation in a science discipline.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE Applicable Mathematics or Calculus. If Calculus is not studied, then a bridging unit may be required.

Specific Requirements

Applicants for this course should refer to the Criminal Record Screening and Clearance Section of this publication. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course. The Department of Education requires all secondary education students to pass a literacy, numeracy and ICT competency test in the first year of the degree. Students who do not pass will be required to take additional study in order to meet competency requirements in these areas. Professional practice in school settings is a core requirementof the degree and may involve out of semester commitment by students.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

Students enrolled in the double degree must pass all units in the education component to gain accreditation and must successfully complete one major stream of mathematics. Students may elect to transfer to a single degree in one of the two disciplines. In this event, the relevant Head of Department shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degrees.

Professional Recognition

This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Mathematical Society and the Australian Society of Operations Research.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
