Syllabus:

The languages and language families of East Asia. The origins of Japanese. The orthographies of East Asia. Orthography and cultural identity. Japanese language and social structure. Intercultural communication. The use of English in East Asia, plus a major research paper.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- A knowledge of the languages of Asia, their distribution and genetic relations. Knowledge of the origins of the major languages and language change. Knowledge of the writing systems of east Asia and their role in cultural identity. Knowledge of the language and social structure of Japan compared with other Asian societies. Knowledge of the intercultural communication between Asian societies and selected Asian societies and the West. Demonstrated the ability to present a talk using power point or similar program and the ability to construct a web page on a topic of their choice within the syllabus. Demonstrated the ability to independently research a topic. Developed a short annotated bibliographyand completed a 5,000 word report on the topic.
