Syllabus:

Internal atomic order and bonding in crystalline solids. Chemical composition and structure of rock-forming minerals. Introduction to petrology. Optical properties of minerals. Introduction to transmitted light microscopy.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have understood the basic principles governing the nature of crystalline solids. Gained knowledge of the essential physical and chemical characteristics of all the major classes of rock-forming silicateminerals. Practiced in the presentation of chemical data on triangular diagrams. Familiarised themselves with the optical properties of minerals. Made use of the polarising microscope as a petrographic tool. Practiced in the identification of minerals inthin section.
